One important lesson I have learned over the years trying to sell manuscripts is that I had to develop a thick skin and learn to accept constructive criticism and rejection.
The agents who look over proposals are professionals and must feel strongly about a story before taking it on -- and...

It had been awhile since I had reviewed all the goings on in the Butts triple homicide case I am writing about. As I continue to prepare the manuscript, I am reminded of all the heartaches, headaches and nonsense involving that case that went on for years.
I have two proposals out and anxiously...

As I continue to work on the story of the Butts triple homicides in East Texas, I completed the chapter on the probable cause hearing for the suspect, Kevin Hailey.
The challenge is to get the pertinent information out without it reading like the transcript word for word. Since I was present in...

I got one proposal with two sample chapters sent via e-mail to an interested agent this weekend. I hope I'll have something positive to report soon. If not, I'll move on and continue to pitch the project.
Wish me luck.

I groused a few weeks back about not being able to retrieve some files from an old computer because it has neither Internet software on it nor a USB port. Yes, I could take it to a "shop" and pay to have it done, but I am cheap!
Anyway, I've been forced to re-type manuscript pages...

I know better than to get too up or too down when hearing from agents. I've had nibbles before that turned into nothing.
But, I've completed the proposal for my true crime book, complete with two sample chapters and will be sending them on their way to two agents who have expressed an...

I have learned a lot in preparing the proposal for my true crime book. I never was really a big reader of true crime, although I had read some like Joseph Wambaugh and an Ann Rule or two.
By the way, Ann Rule rules true crime. She's had 28 books published and another one coming out in November....

A few weeks back I detailed what a non-fiction profile should include. The last few days I've actually had to write one as two agents have requested more information on my book.
It's a chore!
Not only do you have to do some research (sales of similar books, marketing and promotion...

The murder case I am writing about will definitely not be tried in the county where it occurred, Cass. No alternate site has been announced, but by the time the court date rolls around in February, a new location for the trial will have been determined.
I have also learned that the defense made...

It's an interesting process really, trying to match your project with what an agent says they are looking to represent.
I poured over hundreds of more listings Sunday and saved several to go back and query. I did send out one more electronic query to an agent that has on her wish list...

Sent out my first electronic query to a big New York agency over the weekend and had a response back early Monday morning.
Although they found the project "interesting" it wasn't what "they were looking for at this time."
Hey. At least they answered promptly and didn't make...

My outline is complete, 12 chapters worth. Am now filling in each one with some expanded content, like the sample I gave last time, to give the potential agent an idea of what exactly is in that chapter. Some of it is going faster than others.
My box of newspaper clippings and notes is...

As I work on my book proposal I am trying something that worked for a previously published book, an expanded outline.
Instead of just the streamlined A., B., C. listing, under each major heading I am adding an excerpt from that chapter to give the agent reading it an idea of my writing style and...

Was off on Tuesday and made some progress on the proposal my book. It's a great feeling getting excited again about this project. There are two dead little girls and their mother who didn't deserve to be murdered and who don't deserve to be forgotten.

The "box" I mentioned in my last blog contained some interesting stuff. I was correct about letters from the mother of the murder suspect, who is now in prison herself for murder. She wrote me a lengthy letter when she and members of the victims' family appeared on the Maury Povich...
