The Victoria Advocate and Victoria Business and Education Coalition will offer a Best Cake Maker contest in conjunction with its Sweet Success fundraiser.

The first-year contest will be open to commercial and amateur bakers. The winner will be recognized in the paper and will have a booth at the organization's Sweet Success event April 14.

"We're trying to find out who makes the best cakes in Victoria," said Lanell Mantey, the coalition's executive director.

She also added the contest is a way to find out about bakers in the Crossroads.

"We have a lot of talent in Victoria and the surrounding counties we just don't know about," Mantey said.

Starting Wednesday, nominators can write a paragraph of up to 50 words about the person who they think is the best cake maker.

The explanation should include: What makes this cake maker the best, and what cake is his or her claim to fame. Please, submit a photo of the cake, if it is available.

The person may be nominated online as well as via the entry form in the Advocate.

Once the entries are received, Mantey will have a team select the five finalists. The deadline to make the nominations is March 16.

The finalists will be notified and will be asked to bake the cake that received the nomination.

On March 26, the finalists will bring the cakes to the Advocate, where they will be rated by a panel of judges.
