UHV softball wins two at St. Gregory's Invitational

GRAND PRAIRIE - The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars used the long ball Friday to collect two wins in the opening day of the St. Gregory's Invitational softball tournament.

Marley Moehrig belted a two-run homer in the first game to lift the Jaguars to a 5-2 win over Southwestern College.

Ashley Shannon and Kristina Droz each homered in the second game for a 5-4 win over Southern Nazarene.

Emily Bergstrom picked up the win in the opener and Dawn Villegas was the winner in the second game for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars will be back in action Saturday when they face Northwood at 10:30 a.m. and third-ranked Oklahoma City at 1:30 p.m.

UHV can't hold off Incarnate Word onslaught in 9-7 loss

SAN ANTONIO - Creighton Hoke was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and catcher Josh Ledesma was 2 for 2 with an RBI, but the Jaguars struggled to keep Incarnate Word from scoring in a 9-7 loss Friday.

Both teams jumped on each other's starter. Incarnate Word limited Zach Moya to 2 2/3 innings, belting five runs on five hits and five walks along the way. UHV answered by forcing Incarnate Word starter Mark Gomez from the game after just 4 1/3, getting six runs off of him.

But the Cardinals' relief pitcher, Ethan Lutz, limited UHV to one run on two hits the rest of the way. And the Jaguars were victimized again in the sixth for three runs, with their one error coming into play.

Incarnate Word had four errors in the game. The two team will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
